Reefer madness is back!!

Remember those ridiculous black and white films from the early 1930’s, specifically the ones relating to the use of …shock horror…MARIJUANA!!!!!

The one that cracks me up most is the one where this guy takes a puff on a joint, a puff mind you and seconds later is murdering his wife with an axe.

Of course a completely factual account of the typical experience of smoking cannibis, as anyone who has tried it (and their dismembered spouse) will attest.

Well this latest offering from the federal government implies an even worse outcome for potential cannibis smokers…worse than brutally murdering your life partner with an axe you ask??

yes boys and girls…much worse…apparently smoking cannibis might interfere with your ability to play SPORT!!!!!! (OMG, NO, Not SPORT!!!).

Yes apparently the capacity for grown  men to chase a bag of wind around a paddock might be impeded by the demon weed.

“It’s a threat to our very way of life, without the footy…why…I’d actually have to engage the mental capacity requred to spark a single solitary original thought!!!” said a beer monster, yesterday closely resembling a hairy bean bag with arms.

Seriously though, with the ever increasing plethora of baneful substances to entice an increasingly dispossesed younger generation, our “little Menzies”, “old tricky” plays the dope card…FFS, how many decades must elapse before these plonkers work out that prohibition alone doesn’t work. The paper trail of consevative misdirection on this issue could fill several libraries, and yet, despite this we have yet to see the issue of drug addiction addressed for what it truly is, an illness.

If we accept that addiction is by it’s nature a matter of diminished control, exactly what is the point of a punitive approach? To “teach them a lesson”?, well if the lesson is “that the law is screwed” then mission accomplished.

Labor & the Liberals are both equally addicted to mainlining Drug Free Australia’s zero-tolerance misinformation. Iemma even passed ‘hydroponic cannabis’ laws based in the ‘Not Your Father’s Marijuana’ myth.

Only the Greens and Democrats have anything resembling sensible, workable drug policies.

One of these days, some bright spark will table legislation banning enactment of drug policies which are not based in medical evidence.

Most 60/70s freaks presumed that when their generation got their hands on the levers the whole thing would be seen for the insanity that it was. Then they started to notice the breadheads, the poseurs, the people who couldn’t handle freedom and had to run back to what they thought was reality.
I think it is their embarassment that propels them these days, (Garrett anyone?), ashamed at their inability to smell the buds and determined that nobody else should be allowed to do so.
The Puritans didn’t ban bear baiting to protect the bears but because the lower orders enjoyed it. Can’t have yoiks having a good time when their betters are so cramped and terrified of relaxing.

Affecting your ability to do sport? Perhaps. I recall a downhill skier at an olympics (or was it a commonwealth games?) who got his medal (i think it was silver) taken off him because he’d “inhaled” the dreaded weed the night before the race and it was being treated as a performance-enhancing drug!

Perhaps they can’t play up the mental health angle too much, because a recent Parliamentary Library Research Report was relatively nuanced, including:

However, there is ongoing debate over exactly how this association should be characterised. In brief, it appears that while the majority of cannabis users will not develop mental illnesses as a consequence of their cannabis use, a ‘vulnerable minority appear to be at increased risk of experiencing harmful outcomes’.
