QLB Lib Senate Vacancy Filled

Sue Boyce has been chosen by the Liberal Party of Queensland to fill the Senate vacancy caused by the resignation of Santo Santoro. Andrew Bartlett had this to say:

She is an experienced disability advocate and a former President of the Down Syndrome Association of Queensland. I think she has also had involvement with Qld Parents for People with a Disability (QPPD), which has been around over 25 years. I don’t know her well enough to vouch on any personal level as to how well she will perform in the role, but that sort of long-standing direct involvement with disability advocacy should bring some valuable direct experience and perspective to the Senate. It’s been a long time since there’s been a woman from the Liberal Party representing Queensland in the Senate, so it is pleasing to see from that respect too. - full post

Strikes me as a good candidate for a Dead Roo profile.

While I congratulate her on her win, I wonder whether as Ceo of Everhard Industries from which I understand she is stepping down, whether the businesswoman is stronger than the disability advocate part of her profile.

I notice the workers have already been placed under a workchoices ‘Union Collective Workplace Agreement’.

Is she going to battle Howard over his failure to get the recent Commonwealth Agreement with the states funded properly and signed off? Or is she just going to be another Howard sycophant who leaves the disability sector with no funding and no formal agreement?

I am also keen to hear her attitude towards the Howard Government’s bulk movement of people from the Disability Support Pension which I think kicks in from July 1.

I’m in two minds about this. On one hand, she’s obviously better than deranged Young Liberal Mark Powell, who was the initial favourite to take this spot, and it’s always nice to see more women in the Senate. On the other hand, I think she’s far less qualified than former state leader Bob Quinn, who I’d been hoping would get the job; we need more vocal, sane Liberals in the Senate.

We’ll know a lot more about Sue Boyce after State Parliament debates her credentials tomorrow from 11.30am apparently. Should make interesting reading in Hansard.

Well knock me over with a feather! It appears that out of the bowels of a dysfunctional, factionally divided Queensland Liberal Party has emerged a saint in the form of Sue Boyce.

About the only thing new revealed today was that her daughter works in a bakery.

Pollies tripped over themselves to enthuse about the credentials of Sue Boyce and I’m sure that an increasingly isolated Mal Brough will be looking over his shoulder wondering how long his pathetic attempt to be a Minister can last.

Read all about this new wonderwoman here from page 1402:
