A rant at Bob Brown
I am sick of your goddamn optimism. Yeah, I know we’re meant to be the party of optimism, we’re meant to be hopeful, but there needs to be a clear distinction between hope and delusion.
I never want to hear your goddamn predictions about an imminent Green breakthrough again. You know what I mean , it’s your crap about “one million Green votes”, or “four lower house seats” or “the balance of power in the upper house”. What the hell is this meant to achieve? Are you trying to convince the electorate that they’re not wasting their vote when they vote Green?
It’s time to stop spouting fantasy. All it does is make me one very depressed Green every time the results come in.
I want to see a Greens spokesperson who can be bloodywell realistic about our chances, and the work ahead of us. Who can approach our participation in the electoral system for what it is, a long term project. It’s about being credible, it’s about being humble, and it’s about not making our supporters bloody well dissillusioned when the results come in.
And by the way, Greg Barber’s performance at the tally room stank.
end rant.

I think the media needs to share in the blame too. They worked harder than anyone else in hyping up The Greens’ chances.
I still think it was a respectable result for them, all considered.

Personally I’m more sick of the liberals and labour avoiding doing what needs to be done in regards to the environment. Perhaps your energy would be better spent criticising them, rather than focusing on some irrelevant aspect of the one party attempting to achieve something positive.

It sounds to me Kieren, like your morale has taken a pummeling, I can understand that, there is of course the need to balance “realistic honesty” with “not looking like you are giving up”, yes I agree there is unlikely to be some massive breakthrough in Greens votes, more likely it will be a long succession of tiny victories, chipped away in the face of adversity.
Keeping a brave face is simply part of the propaganda process.
