Judging Maddy’s Parents
To quote some random idiot I ran into at the supermarket:
Yikes! I’m having a hard time believing that they are guilty of anything, but I haven’t been following as much.
*engage rant mode*
It’s a matter for the public prosecutor to investigate and see whether there is a case to answer. Then and only then, it will […]

Marge, that was rape.
Last night I once again saw a particularly disturbing episode of The Simpson, Strong Arms of the Ma“.
No, I’m not disturbed by Marge the body builder. I’m disturbed by Marge the rapist.
What are the creators of The Simpsons saying about rape? There is little doubt about it, Homer is raped. But what happens, does Homer […]

Time to re-read Alvin Toffler’s Future Shock
Andrew Bartlett’s blog is now three years old, Andrew had this to say about open discussion threads:
What has changed, however, is that more MPs are waking up to the web as a way of communicating with their constituents. Many of these consist of faux-blog where propaganda rules and there is no chance for genuine […]

Dump your fat friends!
Is anyone else concerned about the ethical implications to be found in the way stories like this are reported? Channel Ten news tonight: “your friends could be making you fat”.
Odd statistical correlations aren’t that interesting, reporters like those behind the ten story feel the need to spin them with a prefferably sensationalist “message”. In this […]

Dropping dead doesn’t make you a decent human being
I think we’ve had a tendency to take the old adage about not speaking ill of the dead a little bit far in Australia in recent years. We saw this last year when Steve Irwin was transformed overnight from the nation’s largest prat to a national hero by the simple act of dying. Over the […]

An equal working world?
Just when I get all het up about feminism along comes the perfect feminist ranting issue. News stories this morning suggest that Therese Rein will sell her multi-million dollar business because it might clash with her husband’s job. Now I’ll grant that maybe she should have been aware that, because if his high profile, particularly […]

Is Cosmo the purest form of 21st Century Feminism?
The recent discussion about advertising and the objectification of women has got me thinking aboout modern feminism. That discussion prompted this chain of thought specifically because I find it slightly amusing when men get together and talk feminism. There always seems to be this earnest desire to make sure everyone is well aware that […]

Late night TV ads - promoting indecent assault?
The advertised ratings for television shows should not only cover the program, but the advertising content, particularly late at night when the program might be an innocuous chat, quiz, or science fiction show.
What concerns me most is that the barrage of explicit ads may contribute to an indecent assault.
Even a viewer-advice notice every ad-break can […]

Denton’s foray into religion
For those of us who either couldn’t be arsed heading to one of the few cinema’s that aired, tonight’s ABC airing of God on My Side was our first chance to view Denton’s subtle but damning broadside against fundamentalist Christianity.
It was so subtle you might even question whether compiling an attack on fundamentalism was Denton’s […]

Are lefties created by conservative education? (2)
To Skeptics of my "classics predispose to progressive views" post,
Greetings.
I agree the opinions of ancient authors do differ from our more sympathetic views, but think we approach the works differently.

Bullies, citizens and private schools
With bullying in the news, I suggest the claim of private schools to be creators of good citizens is easily tested by prospective customers (oops, parents) if they use public transport between 15:30 and 17:00 and correlate student behaviour with uniforms.

Are lefties created by conservative education?
Traditional western values, instilled by an ultra-conservation education in classics, promotes left-wing and progressive politics, not the agenda of the uber-right.

The Anzac Address I Want To Hear
The Anzac Address I Want To Hear
Anzac Day should remind us that there is no more damning diagnostic of political mismanagement than to allow the conditions for war to develop. There can be no greater failure of an electorate’s judgement of the capabilities and character of the elected.
A sense of nationalistic pride has arisen in […]
