Judging Maddy’s Parents
To quote some random idiot I ran into at the supermarket:
Yikes! I’m having a hard time believing that they are guilty of anything, but I haven’t been following as much.
*engage rant mode*
It’s a matter for the public prosecutor to investigate and see whether there is a case to answer. Then and only then, it will […]

Are we stuck on the Stairway to Kevin?
Tonight I joined millions of Australians and watched what will no doubt be the highest rating episode of Chaser’s War to date. The whole thing was sub-par, as if a week of hype took the wind out of their sails. But one bit struck a cord, Stairway to Kevin.
There’s a country that knows,
that Howard’s on […]

APEC Coverage Roundup
Well, we never did manage to get a Deadrooer up to Sydney for some front line coverage of the APEC protests. Thankfully other CitJ’s and blogger’s did, and so we present you this selection of interesting APEC coverage.
Kim at Larvatus Prodeo posts this report from a lurker on the security in central Sydney:
Like most people […]

Marge, that was rape.
Last night I once again saw a particularly disturbing episode of The Simpson, Strong Arms of the Ma“.
No, I’m not disturbed by Marge the body builder. I’m disturbed by Marge the rapist.
What are the creators of The Simpsons saying about rape? There is little doubt about it, Homer is raped. But what happens, does Homer […]

Laughing at the “disabled” update - naughty bits exposed!
Michael Noonan’s controversial and until now secret film footage that caused an international stir about the rights of people with disabilities has now been released to the public. Slim Launches Blogotariat
Occasional DeadRooer Slim has launched a new project, Blogotariat.
Basically Blogotariat aggregates content from the Australian blogosphere, sorts it into one of Slim’s tags (eg. sci &tech -> climate), and gives readers the ability to rate it.
Slim hopes to expand the project to include human edited “weekly roundup”, perhaps something like Club Troppo’s Missing Link.
I […]

Julian Burnside responds to Andrew Bolt
When Bruce Trevorrow won his landmark case against the state of South Australia, scumbag Andrew Bolt argued that the success of his case actually proved there was no stolen generation. Bolt thus argued that this case would have no wider impact on the issue of the stolen generations.
Trevorrow’s lawyer, Julian Burnside, has published a damning […]

Weekend Discussion - The Chilling Effect Edition
I can feel the chill. News like this (admittedly it’s old news now) threatens to open the freezer door on the Australian blogosphere:
A LIBERAL candidate for this year’s federal election has been forced to stand down after describing Victorian Transport Minister Lynne Kosky as a “bitch” and “f—wit” on his blog. - Age
This story (hat […]

Time to re-read Alvin Toffler’s Future Shock
Andrew Bartlett’s blog is now three years old, Andrew had this to say about open discussion threads:
What has changed, however, is that more MPs are waking up to the web as a way of communicating with their constituents. Many of these consist of faux-blog where propaganda rules and there is no chance for genuine […]

Review: The God Who Wasn’t There
Brian Flemming’s The God Who Wasn’t There is an interesting attempt at a Michael Moore style broadside upon Christian religion. Flemming aims to raise questions in the minds of believers, starting with the inconsistencies in the story of Jesus before moving on to a critique of modern fundamentalist Christian practice in the United States.

John Howard on Yahoo! Answers
Howard’s foray into the new media continues with a foray into the world of Yahoo! Answers.
The question is:
If given the opportunity to ask the Prime Minister one question, what would that be?
For those of you who’ve never used Yahoo! Answers before, anyone can post an answer, and people can then vote the answers “up or […]

Open Discussion (29 July 07)
This comic filched from TruthOut, who incidently, kick arse. The infamous Michael McKinley recomended them as a source to students looking for examples of “the counter narrative”. They were one of the first, and remain one of the finest, examples of what the internet could be in terms of circumventing the mass media’s information […]

DeadRoo gets a BIG CASH DONATION!
Today at 4:51pm we received our first monetary donation. It would have easily covered our costs for a year.
And then, for the first time at DeadRoo, we wrestled with a serious ethical dilemma about our conduct.
You see, with a couple of clicks of the mouse I suddenly realized that the donor had a vested […]

Dump your fat friends!
Is anyone else concerned about the ethical implications to be found in the way stories like this are reported? Channel Ten news tonight: “your friends could be making you fat”.
Odd statistical correlations aren’t that interesting, reporters like those behind the ten story feel the need to spin them with a prefferably sensationalist “message”. In this […]
