A September update from my political garden
Gardening, it’s a political act. What bigger rebellion against the “golden straightjacket” could there be, to instead of buying food, grow your own and eat it?
It’s been some months since I posted a new batch of photos from my political garden. In the time since the June update I’ve done and learnt a LOT about […]

It’s not easy being Green… in Saudi Arabia!
Like other Greens involved in the current election campaign, I’ve had cause for despair at times. When you think it’s tough being Green, spare a thought for those Greens working in some of the worlds harder political situations.
Ladies, Gents and others, let me introduce you to the Green Party of Saudi Arabia.
The organising environment presents […]

Family First proclaim “we’re greenies!”
Having spent the whole of 2004 explaining that they weren’t The Greens, the political wing of the Assemblies of God (Family First), has unveiled it’s new campaign strategy. They’re going to imitate The Greens.
In a new video so cringe worthy I thought it was a parody, Family First have announced “We’re for the environment!”
Seriously, you […]

Worst election slogan eva!
I’m not usually one to diss The Greens (being a proud Green’s supporter and all), but…

Are we stuck on the Stairway to Kevin?
Tonight I joined millions of Australians and watched what will no doubt be the highest rating episode of Chaser’s War to date. The whole thing was sub-par, as if a week of hype took the wind out of their sails. But one bit struck a cord, Stairway to Kevin.
There’s a country that knows,
that Howard’s on […]

APEC Coverage Roundup
Well, we never did manage to get a Deadrooer up to Sydney for some front line coverage of the APEC protests. Thankfully other CitJ’s and blogger’s did, and so we present you this selection of interesting APEC coverage.
Kim at Larvatus Prodeo posts this report from a lurker on the security in central Sydney:
Like most people […]

The Official Apec Photo Post
No doubt a myriad of bloggers will exclaim in utter disgust at the official APEC photo. I’ll leave it to others to discuss just why the whole concept of an Australian “national costume” is absurd, and why even if we had to pick a national costume, it certainly wouldn’t be a Dryza-bone, and what all […]

Marge, that was rape.
Last night I once again saw a particularly disturbing episode of The Simpson, Strong Arms of the Ma“.
No, I’m not disturbed by Marge the body builder. I’m disturbed by Marge the rapist.
What are the creators of The Simpsons saying about rape? There is little doubt about it, Homer is raped. But what happens, does Homer […]

Slim Launches Blogotariat
Occasional DeadRooer Slim has launched a new project, Blogotariat.
Basically Blogotariat aggregates content from the Australian blogosphere, sorts it into one of Slim’s tags (eg. sci &tech -> climate), and gives readers the ability to rate it.
Slim hopes to expand the project to include human edited “weekly roundup”, perhaps something like Club Troppo’s Missing Link.
I […]

AWAs responsible for screwing womens pay in mines?
The great thing about AWAs was meant to be the individuals ability to negotiate conditions that suit both them and their employer.
The mining sector, we are told, is one area in which this has been a startling success. Of course the counter narrative is that this is only the case because skills in the mining […]

Weekend Discussion: Student Politics…
University politics are vicious precisely because the stakes are so small. - Henry Kissinger
Yeah, Rebecca and I have been absent this past week.
Rebecca was contesting a position in the ANU student’s association elections, I was lending a hand.
Kissinger was right, the stakes are tiny in any campus election, and thus all too often the […]

Julian Burnside responds to Andrew Bolt
When Bruce Trevorrow won his landmark case against the state of South Australia, scumbag Andrew Bolt argued that the success of his case actually proved there was no stolen generation. Bolt thus argued that this case would have no wider impact on the issue of the stolen generations.
Trevorrow’s lawyer, Julian Burnside, has published a damning […]

Weekend Discussion - The Chilling Effect Edition
I can feel the chill. News like this (admittedly it’s old news now) threatens to open the freezer door on the Australian blogosphere:
A LIBERAL candidate for this year’s federal election has been forced to stand down after describing Victorian Transport Minister Lynne Kosky as a “bitch” and “f—wit” on his blog. - Age
This story (hat […]

Time to re-read Alvin Toffler’s Future Shock
Andrew Bartlett’s blog is now three years old, Andrew had this to say about open discussion threads:
What has changed, however, is that more MPs are waking up to the web as a way of communicating with their constituents. Many of these consist of faux-blog where propaganda rules and there is no chance for genuine […]
