Since Fiji have sent the New Zealand Ambassador home, could Australia the US Ambassador on the basis of their human rights abuses?

Yes, technically we could expell the US ambassador. To do so would be considered a particuarly hostile act, and is thus highly unlikely.

Though there was a recent example of Australia expelling a diplomat. Phillip Ruddock declared an Israeli embassy worker persona non grata. The individual in question was sleeping with his daughter.
